Temperatures are forecast to rise to 40C on Wednesday, the met office announced, topping the 38.5C recorded at the Athalassa weather station a day earlier which was the highest temperature ever recorded for October.

According to Kitas weather portal, the previous high was 38C, in 1991.

“On Thursday temperatures will drop slightly but will be significantly above average,” the announcement by the met office said.

Temperatures will gradually drop on Friday and Saturday, to levels slightly higher than usual.

July, August and September have been the hottest months on record since the Athalassa weather station was opened in 1983.
