Why Prince Louis always wears shorts – but George is allowed to wear trousers
Ever noticed that every time you see a photo of Prince Louis, the royal tot is wearing shorts?
It’s hardly surprising when he’s being snapped in the summer months, like the gorgeous Father’s Day pictures the Cambridges shared back in June, but it’s slightly different when the weather isn’t quite as warm.
And it was the same for his big brother Prince George, who was always pictured in shorts, wherever he was, whatever the weather.
But more recently we’ve seen George sporting smart trousers, while Louis is still in his shorts. But why?
According to etiquette expert William Hanson, the reason behind the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s outfit choices is tradition – and essentially because they are rather posh.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, he explains that the tradition dates back to the 16th century, saying: “It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts.
“Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.
“Although times are slowly changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”
George and Louis aren’t the first royal boys to follow the tradition, and Princes William and Harry were also dressed in shorts when they were younger.
According to Hanson, boys normally switch to trousers when they are eight, but Kate and Wills have brought this forward for George.
We saw the Cambridges’ oldest child wearing trousers for the first time in the family’s 2018 Christmas card photo – which showed all five of them sitting on a tree near their countryside home in Norfolk.
So sorry Louis, it seems you might have a few more years of shorts yet…
We’ve been treated to a number of adorable snaps of little Louis during the lockdown, including some great shots of him meeting Sir David Attenborough last week.
The veteran broadcaster chatting to the Cambridge children when he popped into Kensington Palace for a royal engagement with William.
We also saw some cute new photos on Louis’s second birthday, which showed him getting very messy as he made his own rainbow picture for the NHS.
