UK weather forecast: Brits to be battered by heavy rain, 50mph winds and floods

Stormy October is set to continue with Britain facing further heavy downpours and 50mph winds.

A further deluge of rainfall on Tuesday could lead to another washout with temperatures struggling to reach double figures.

And the miserable downpours could lead to flooding in parts of England and Wales as the unpleasant conditions go on.

The Environment Agency has issued 11 flood warnings and 37 flood alerts across England while Natural Resources Wales has four alerts in place.

The country has already seen more rain than is usual for the whole of October, just six days in.

Winchcombe currently tops the charts with 118mm of rain so far, 37mm more than its usually monthly average for this time of year.

The rest of the top six is made up of Aboyne, Wiggonholt, Odiham, Aberdeen and Reading, according to BBC weather charts.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s rain will be patchy in comparison to what’s to come from Thursday as a new area of low pressure moves in – and could be officially named as a storm by the Met Office.

“This is going to bring a return to some heavier, more persistent outbreaks of rain later this week and that could bring some renewed localised flooding,” said BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes.

“That could cause one or two problems.”

Britain has been lashed by plenty of rain overnight into Tuesday, with several bands of rain crossing the country with lows of 8C.

Today, rain is expected to move across into the Midlands and eastern England through the day, while plenty of showers are also set to strike western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“Perhaps some of the showers becoming really lengthy across north Wales, Merseyside, Greater Manchester – quite windy in the afternoon in the southwest with gusts of 50-odd mph,” added Mr Fawkes.

On Wednesday, the wind will switch to a more northwesterly thrust taking much of the showers up that end of the UK with more sunshine to go around for other areas alongside highs of 15C.

Sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy at times. Parts of eastern Scotland and eastern England perhaps escaping the showers and remaining dry. Breezy, especially in south where there is a risk of coastal gales.

Showers becoming confined to parts of northern and central UK with other areas dry with some clear spells developing. Staying breezy.

Many places dry with some sunshine. Scattered showers in north, most frequent and perhaps heavy at times across north Scotland. Cloud and rain moving across southwest Britain during the day.

Rain is likely at times across southern and perhaps central parts during Thursday and Friday. Otherwise rather cold with a mixture of sunshine and showers, these heaviest in the northwest.
