Twelve-year-olds ‘to get Covid jabs from September’ under plans to stop winter wave

Children as young as 12 will get a single dose of the Covid jab from September under new plans by the Government to stop a winter wave.

The Government are reportedly planning scenarios in a bid to provide people with a third line of protection against winter deaths.

The leaked ‘core planning’ documents show that children will be given the dose when schools open.

It also shows that all Brits over 50 will be offered booster vaccines against new variants as a third line of protection, on top of the drive for flu jabs.

The plans, seen by The Sun, reportedly show the Government are planning another bumper flu immunisation drive like last year, with half the country eligible for a shot.

A source said: “Plans are in place to vaccinate children aged 12 upwards, and senior government officials have been briefed.

“Though controversial, it is deemed necessary to stop the UK regressing in its remarkable fight against Covid.”

The classified documents also reportedly reveal that a ‘worse case scenario’ is being planned, where kids aged just five would be vaccinated from as early as July.

Along with this, extra measures are being considered if the summer lockdown opening leads to a rise in new variants emerging.

Although youngsters are at much lower risk of falling ill from the virus, they can still spread it.

The Department of Health insisted no decisions had yet been made on vaccinating children.

It added: “We will be guided by experts once clinical trials have concluded.”
