Sweet meaning behind Princess Eugenie’s baby name – and a tribute to her grandad

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have finally revealed the full name of their baby son – August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

Bookies were convinced the couple would name him Arthur, with the odds at 5/1, followed by James at 6/1 and Frederick, Edward and Albert were all chalked up at 8/1 apiece.

Posting on Instagram, the couple said: “We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

⁣”Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can’t express. We are excited to be able to share these photos with you.⁣

“Thank you to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy.”

But the choice has defied the odds with two unusual picks – so what do the names mean?

Philip

The middle name of Philip is a tribute to Eugenie’s granddad after the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital on Tuesday as a “precautionary measure” following a bout of illness.

August

August has a Latin origin, meaning “great” or “magnificent,” and was a title given to Roman emperors.

It is also shared with Prince Ernst August of Hanover and remains popular among the German hereditary line from which the Queen descends.

The two families are still close today, with Prince Ernst and his wife Princess Ekaterina attending Eugenie and Jack’s royal wedding in October 2018.

Hawke

Hawke is an old Anglo-Saxon name deriving from the Old English “Hafon”.

Traditionally a surname, Hawke has become more popular among new parents since 2018, according to the website BabyCenter.

The tot was born 11 days ago, one day after the Duke of York Prince Andrew’s 61st birthday.

The new royal baby is the Queen’s ninth great-grandchild and she and Prince Philip are said to be “delighted”.

The new baby is 11th in line to the throne but will move swiftly to 12th with the birth of Prince Harry and Meaghan Markle’s second child later this year.

Eugenie gave birth at the same hospital she was born in, The Portland Hospital, which is also where Meghan Markle had Archie in 2019.

A maternity stay at the luxury private hospital can cost anywhere between £6,760 and £500,000 depending on how many extras the mum-to-be opts. The average stay is about £20,000.

The tot weighed 8lbs 1oz and the couple broke with tradition by immediately sharing a black and white photo to Eugenie’s Instagram of the baby’s tiny hand.

The princess is said to be doing well after delivering August at 9.55am on 9 February via C-section due to complications with scoliosis.

Eugenie announced she was expecting the new arrival in September to the delight of royal watchers.

The mum-to-be posted a snap of an adorable pair of baby booties on Instagram.

Eugenie and Jack met on slopes of luxury ski resort Verbier and dated for seven years before he popped the question.

He got down on one knee when they were on a romantic holiday in Nicaragua, with the princess claiming she was completely surprised.

They married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in October 2019.
