Prince Philip ‘skipped Meghan Markle and Harry’s wedding reception after health issue’
They both beamed throughout the Windsor ceremony and sat with the rest of the royal family for the official wedding photos.
But a new book about the Duke of Edinburgh claims he left shortly after the snaps were taken, skipping the lunchtime reception hosted by the Queen.
In Prince Philip Revealed, royal expert Ingrid Seward explains that the Duke was admitted to King Edward VII hospital for a hip replacement just before the wedding.
Despite the huge operation, he was determined not to miss their big day and set himself the goal of being up and walking by then.
Seward writes: “However successful the operation, elderly patients normally need several weeks or rehabilitation, moving with the aide of a stick or crutches as they learn to walk again on the new hip.
“Not so Prince Philip.
“He set his goal as attending Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle but didn’t confirm he would be there.
“Philip appeared at the Queen’s side on 19 May, walking through a straight back and without even a stick to assist him.
“Although he hates long sermons, he sat through the 14-minute sermon by Evangelical Bishop Michael Carey without wincing, and after the service took his place in the official photos in the castle’s Green Drawing Room.
“He did not, however, attend the lunchtime reception given by the Queen for the newly ennobled Duke and Duchess of Sussex and 600 guests in St George’s Hall, with Sir Elton John providing an exclusive surprise cabaret.”
While you would assume the Duke would have been pretty disappointed to miss the celebrations, it might not have been all bad as he’s been very vocal of his dislike for Sir Elton’s music in the past.
During the popstar’s set on the 2001 Royal Variety Performance, Phil was heard muttering: “I wish he’d turn the microphone off”.
When they chatted afterwards, Philip said to Sir Elton: “Oh it’s you that owns that ghastly car is it? We often see it when driving to Windsor Castle.”
