Ozersay quits as ‘deputy PM’ over Tatar’s decision on Varosha

Kudret Ozersay, ‘deputy prime minister’ in the north, decided to quit his position on Wednesday after ‘prime minister’ Ersin Tatar announced he would be re-opening the closed-off Varosha beachfront, with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s blessing.

The move to open the beachfront, announced by Tatar on Tuesday, drew widespread condemnation both in the north and in the government-controlled areas, as well as with the international community.

President Nicos Anastasiades said Turkey would be in violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 782, which reaffirmed previous ones.

The UN Security Council that adopted resolution 550 on Varosha in 1984, said that “attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants is inadmissible” while it “calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the United Nations.”

In an announcement on Wednesday, Ozersay’s party HP said they had decided to leave the ‘government’ over the decisions made by Tatar and Ankara. Ozersay, who had also been calling for Varosha to open, said he was against the decision made by Tatar, because he was turned the issue into a campaign matter.

Previously, Ozersay had called for Varosha to open under Turkish Cypriot administration.

Returning from Ankara, Tatar said it was not right for Ozersay’s party to leave the ‘government’, but he would request from Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to dissolve the ‘government’ and have a ‘transition government’ run things until the elections in the north on Sunday.
