Mum who had to bury second child says last words daughter said to her were ‘I love you’
A grief-stricken mum who has just buried her second child has revealed the last thing her daughter said to her was “I love you”.
Brooke Reid, 12, died after she became was trapped as a fire ripped through her home in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday.
She was screaming for help but she could not be saved despite brave attempt by neighbours.
One neighbour tried to go into the burning property six times before he was stopped by others.
The mum-of-five had given birth to a stillborn baby at 20 weeks in 2007.
She said: “I have already buried a child and now I will have to bury another one.”
Hours after speaking to Brooke Ms McMaster said her brother called and screamed down the phone: “Your house is on fire”.
As Brooke was screaming for help desperate locals tried to break into the house to rescue her.
Ms McMaster rushed over to her home and said she was confronted by “something out of a horror movie”.
Police at the scene gave the mum-of-five the horrific news that her daughter had died and she said her “world ended at that moment”.
“As a mum you never think you’re going to have to bury your own child – I’ve had to do it twice,” she said.
Ms McMaster said Brooke was named after her daughter and saying goodbye to him “was absolutely devastating” but burying a child a second time “will be a million times harder”.
A crowdfundraiser set up two days ago by Dawn Walker to help the family has already raised more than £8,000
It reads: “Its no secret that this family have gone through so much and no parent this young should be loosing (sic) another one of their beautiful babies.
“I beg you all to dig deep and help raise some pennies so we can support Brookes family in these hard times.
“Funeral costs and then some to ensure they can grieve in peace and have no further concerns at this time. The family have lost not only this gorgeous little lady but their home, belongings, and of course memories of young Brooke too.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
