Man ‘watching Man U on TV’ as police smash into his home amid bomb scare

A man was watching football on the TV when police rushed into his home and arrested him.

Officers used a ‘wam-ram’ to batter down the front door of Ralph Whincup’s home in Salford while he watched a Manchester United match.

They arrested him amid a bomb scare near Salford Royal Hospital on Sunday, Manchester Evening reported.

It later emerged the alert was caused by a firework which had been left in the boot of a car, prompting the evacuation of almost 50 nearby flats.

The Army bomb squad was called and concluded the items found in the Seat Leon were harmless.

Mobile phone footage shows an officer calling Mr Whincup a “half-wit” before crashing through his front-door, close to where the car was parked.

The startled resident says knows the owner of the car at the centre of the investigation.

Police said he was arrested for obstructing police and that his house was searched ‘as a precaution and in order to ensure there was no risk to the public’.

Mr Whincup has said his treatment at the hands of the police was “disgusting”.

In footage of the police raid, officers can be heard battering at the door as Mr Whincup shouts: “I’ve already said what the f*** are you playing at?”

An unseen officer on the other side of door orders him to ‘open the door now’ but he replies: “How can I open it if you’ve just smashed it to f***! Are you f***ing stupid.”

Then another unseen officer is heard to call him ‘half-wit’ and Mr Whincup replies: “Half-wit? You f***ing bumpkin! Half-wit.”

He returns to watch the football United versus Chelsea match and, addressing two others in the flat, he continues: “Have you heard this f***ing bumpkin!

“You’ve heard what they’ve said. Trying to watch the football.”

Mr Whincup can be heard lighting up a cigarette and describing the police attention as ‘f***ing disgusting”.

Moments before the front door comes crashing down, the homeowner says: “Half-wits they’re calling me. Think they’re gonna Taser me.”

He was arrested at about 5pm on Sunday and taken to Wigan police station.

He was released at 1am without being interviewed or charged.

“They come banging on my door and I’ve ignored them,” Mr Whincup said.

“The next thing I know they are smashing the door in. They arrested me and took me to the station.

“They strip-searched me and put me in a suicide cell. It’s disgusting what they did with me.

“Then they’ve thrown me out of Wigan police station in the middle of the night.

“I didn’t even know which police station it was. Luckily my sister was coming to get me

“It was disgusting, absolutely disgusting. I didn’t do nothing wrong. If I had done something wrong, I would have understood it.

“But I was just watching the football on the telly in my house. I didn’t do nothing wrong.”

Mr Whincup, who admitted to battling with mental health problems for years, said he was stripped and given a ‘suicide suit’ to wear in his cell

He said officers at first said he was being arrested under counter terrorism powers but later on suspicion of obstructing police.

“They all seemed to think they were doing a great job, all slapping themselves on the back,” he continued.

“It was ridiculous. It was a firework.”

A spokeswoman for GMP confirmed Mr Whincup was arrested for obstructing police and that his house was searched ‘as a precaution and in order to ensure there was no risk to the public’.

She added: “As is standard procedure, the man underwent a risk assessment at the custody suite, which he chose to not engage with.

“He was therefore categorised high-risk and, in order to ensure his safety, was issued with anti-rip clothing in replacement of his own clothes.

He was issued with an FPN (fixed penalty notice) and later released.”

Police have also confirmed the 31-year-old driver of the car was arrested and later released without charge.
