Woman captured on CCTV stealing Christmas tree from devastated family’s home

A family’s Christmas tree has been stolen from their home by a thief who was captured on CCTV – leaving them heartbroken.

Kavillen Oliveira’s festive decorations were swiped from outside her front door by a passing woman.

CCTV of the theft showed a blonde woman walk up the path, pick up the three-foot tree, then casually take it back through the gate.

Kavillen said her four-year-old son was excited to put the tree outside their home in Watford, Hertfordshire, to brighten up their neighbourhood after having a tough year due to the pandemic.

But they were left “sad” after it was stolen during the bizarre incident at around 1.40am last Tuesday (December 1).

Kavillen, who was born and grew up in Brazil, said she was shocked when she saw the CCTV from outside her front door.

She added that the theft was “ridiculous” and that to do it during the festive season left her feeling the “humanity of some people has gone”.

The 25-year-old said: “It was a difficult year for everyone and so we wanted to put something happy outside, but for us it was a sad week because it was taken.

“It was just a tree for decoration, we saw our neighbours put out a Christmas tree and decorations outside their homes so we thought we would do it too.

“It was a sad thing to happen. I was so shocked, it was not a teenager, it looked like a lady [in the CCTV]. This kind of thing is something you see in Brazil, but I did not expect this in England.”

Kavillen added that as far as she knows, none of her neighbours had their trees stolen.

The mother-of-one also said she was “surprised” someone would think of committing such a crime at this time of year.

She added: “I think ours was taken because it was small and not too heavy. It was not fixed to the ground so it was easy to pick up.

“This time of year is supposed to be for sharing and to be thankful for what happened during the year, so for this to happen is disgusting.”

Hertfordshire Constabulary confirmed the theft was reported to police and officers are investigating, but no arrests have yet been made.

They also confirmed they were aware of the CCTV footage.

Kavillen added that people in the community have sent her family messages of support following the incident.

She added: “Although we were sad when we saw it was stolen, people have helped us to stand up and continue with our Christmas.

“Some people have offered us a tree, others said sorry and wished us a great Christmas and another person sent to my son a new small Christmas tree with a decoration.”
