UK weather forecast: Brits to plunge into -10C as freezing fog blankets parts of country

Brits are set for a frosty start this morning as forecasters warn fog is set to blanket parts of the UK.

Met Office officials warned that central and southern parts of Britain are set to be covered by dense freezing fog.

However frost is set to cover most of the UK, and heavy rain will strike parts of the northeast.

Temperatures are expected to have dropped as low -10C overnight in parts of the country after yesterday dropped to -9C.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Winter hazards are dominating the weather as the emphasis changes from snow to frost and ice.

“The UK will stay in cold air north of the jet stream.”

Parts of the northeastern higher ground may also see some snow early on Tuesday.

Yellow weather warnings remain in place for rain in Scotland and thick fog in southern England.

Forecasters advise Brits to expect delays on transport as a result.

The Met Office predicted temperatures frequently colder-than-average through December.

Leon Brown, head of meteorological operations at The Weather Company’s Weather Channel arm, said: “Arctic incursions mean December could well be the coldest for a number of years.”

As many as 25,000 car breakdowns were expected today across all UK providers, data trends showed.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “Slow down in difficult conditions.”

Rain in the north. Foggy in the southeast. Chilly.

Outbreaks of rain across Scotland, moving south to affect parts of Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales. Some showers in the southwest and also the far southeast. Some sunny spells elsewhere, but fog patches slow to clear and feeling cold.

Evening fog in the southeast will mostly clear as cloud and patchy rain move southeastwards. Clearer skies following to western parts with a frost in places.

Cloud and patchy rain across eastern areas only slowly clearing. Brighter elsewhere, but turning wet and windy in the west later.

Outbreaks of rain gradually moving from the west on Thursday. Often cloudy on Friday and Saturday with showers. Milder than recently.
