Covid cases jump in four new hotspots as 60% of England sees infections rates fall

Coronavirus cases have jumped in four new hotspots as 60% of areas in England see infections rates fall.

New figures out today show four UK hotspots – one in Tier 3 and three in Tier 2 – where it appears the toughened 3 Tiers lockdown restrictions have not so far prevented Covid-19 cases from surging.

In today’s update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases for every local authority area in England, figures are taken from the seven days to December 3.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

In the Tier 2 county of Essex, both the boroughs of Basildon and Brentwood threaten to plunge the county into the toughest Tier 3 restrictions from Wednesday next week, when the first review of the tiers is to take place.

Today’s figures show Basildon has seen 731 new cases recorded in the seven days to December 3 – the equivalent of 390.5 cases per 100,000 people, in the area.

This is up from 544 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to November 26 – or a rate of 290.6.

In Brentwood , the rate has increased from 157.1 to 249.3, as 192 new cases were recorded compared to 121 in the previous seven day period.

Meanwhile in the hard-hit Tier 3 county of Kent , the area covered by the Medway unitary authority has now become the Kent borough of Swale as the worst affected coronavirus hotspot in the UK.

Medway has the highest rate in England, with 1,691 new cases recorded in the seven days to December 3 – the equivalent of 607.1 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 495.4 in the seven days to November 26.

And finally, the Tier 2 county of Surrey, the borough of Runnymede has seen its rate increase from 143.1 to 275.1, as 246 new cases were recorded compared to 128 in the previous seven day period.

The three areas with the highest case rates in the UK are all in Kent.

Joining Medway in the top three are Swale and the district of Thanet.

Swale has the second highest rate, up slightly from 554.4 to 588.3, with 883 new cases.

Thanet is in third place, where the rate has risen very slightly from 443.9 to 449.5.0, with 638 new cases.

A majority of areas in England (188 out of 315) have seen a fall in case rates.

In Basildon , council leader Cllr Gavin Callaghan issued an “urgent message” to residents, warning it could be put into Tier 3 lockdown in “just two weeks” – and there are fears the areas that have spiked could plunged the whole county into Tier 3.

Cllr Callaghan said: “You would have seen that across the country the coronavirus infection rate is coming down. That is not the case in Basildon. We are getting very close to the point of 300 infections per 100,000.

“That would mean we are getting close into going into a tier 3 lockdown.

“We do not want, on December 16, to be closing our non-essential retail and all of our other businesses that will have to close in Tier 3 – just nine days before Christmas.

“I know everyone is fed up with Covid – I am fed up with Covid. But if we want to make sure we are protecting our loved ones, then I am urging you in the next few days and weeks, please play by the new rules. We have got to social distance and wear masks.

“We are so close to getting light at the end of the tunnel. What we do in the next few hours, will determine how long that tunnel is.

“If we want to avoid going into Tier 3 on the 16th December I am urging everyone in our borough to keep playing by the rules and we will get through this together.”

The figures, for the seven days to December 3, are based on tests carried out in laboratories – pillar one of the Government’s testing programme – and in the wider community – pillar two.

Data for the most recent four days – December 4 to 7 – has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency, based on Public Health England data published on December 7 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to December 3; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to December 3; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 26; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 26.
