Energy Minister Natasa Pilides on Tuesday reiterated Cyprus’ commitment to meeting its ‘green targets’ within the EU, but said that special consideration should be given to an island that is isolated from European energy grids.

Speaking during an informal meeting of EU energy ministers video conference, Pilides welcomed the bloc’s role as a leader in the drive to mitigate climate change, and noted that Cyprus is ready to play its part in adopting policies geared at creating a green economy.

She said Cyprus is committed to strictly adhering to its national action plan on energy and the climate.

However, she added, the European Commission should take into account an assessment of the impact of such policies on each EU member state individually – for instance countries with particular environmental and social attributes, such as island nations that are isolated from mainland Europe’s energy grids.

For Cyprus in particular, Pilides highlighted the importance of the EuroAsia Interconnector, an EU project of common interest. The EuroAsia Interconnector is a planned subsea power cable that will link Cyprus, Israel and Greece.

Another avenue with potential for Cyprus, is boosting research and innovation in sectors like energy storage.
