The revised dates for all qualifying events for the Tokyo Olympics have now been set. This affects Cypriot athletes who have yet to secure a spot at the Games and who are currently already in training.

According to a statement released by the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC), 11 Cypriot athletes have already qualified for next year’s rearranged Games. These include athletes from a variety of sports, including sailing champion Pavlos Kontides, sprinter Eleni Artymata, and hurdler Milan Trajkovic.

However, a number of Cypriot athletes are still in contention for a spot at the Tokyo Olympics through the upcoming qualifying events.

In gymnastics, there are two events relating to European nations and these will be contested in March of 2021 in Basel, Switzerland. Elias Georgiou will strive to take one of the two qualifying spots.

In sailing, the next important event on the calendar is the 2020 RS:X European and Youth European Championships taking place from November 22-28, in Vilamoura, Portugal. Cypriot Natasa Lapp only needs to come first among countries who have not qualified to secure a spot, since each country is only allowed one card per boat. Panayiotis Iordanou will also attempt to qualify through his participation at the Finn Gold Cup in 2021, also taking place in Portugal.

In swimming, each country is allocated two spots from the universality clause in the event where they don’t qualify through the traditional way, where a certain performance benchmark has been met. However, the clause states that “only athletes who have participated in the FINA World Championships in the year prior to the Olympics, and who are approved by FINA to compete, are eligible for Universality Places”. Cypriot athletes have until June 27, to secure qualification through their own performances.

In track and field, the complete list of participating Cypriot athletes is expected to be finalised on June 29, when world rankings will have been locked in place until the completion of the Tokyo Olympics. The world rankings list will begin to be updated from December 1, upon which time any applicable events will be eligible to count towards qualification.

In taekwondo, the final major event will be the European Qualification event next year. It will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Four Cypriot athletes will compete for two available spots across different weight categories.

The Cyprus Olympic Committee does not exclude the qualification of other Cypriot athletes, including archers, boxers, judokas, and more.
