Customer launched racist outburst at Indian restaurant owner over £10 bill
A curry house owner has said he was subjected to a racist outburst from a customer who grabbed him by the blazer and snatched the food from his hands.
Mohammed Saeid, also known as Jay, who runs Robby’s Indian Fine Dining in Kingswinford near Birmingham, was delivering a takeaway that was ‘heavily discounted’ due to an error on the restaurant’s behalf when the altercation took place.
He told Birmingham Live that he was physically assaulted on the doorstep when he asked for £10 to cover the cost of add-ons and delivery.
“I went to deliver a takeaway to a customer that we heavily discounted due to previous error on our part,” he said.
“When I went over, I said it was £10 for the add-ons and delivery charge. The customer refused to pay, saying he didn’t have £10.
“I was then greeted with an outburst of racism. I was grabbed by the blazer, and then a woman came and snatched the food out of my hands.
“It took me by surprise, I’ve never encountered something like that from a customer before.”
The police were then called to the address and Mr Saeid has since decided to make a formal complaint against two customers.
“The police were called and it was dealt with very quickly,” he said.
“I didn’t want them taken into custody, especially with everything that’s going at the moment.
“To all the local delivery drivers in the area, please be careful when you are making deliveries, especially during the evenings where it’s
getting darker earlier.”
He added that despite the ordeal, the support from loyal customers and the community had helped turn ‘a negative into a positive’.
“Robby’s will continue to always strive in Kingswinford serving the community and always look to rectify any errors,” he said.
“We were recently giving out free meals to the vulnerable. We have a lot of customers who get behind us.”
One such customer wrote on Facebook : “We had a fab meal with you guys this evening. Great food and lovely service.
“Keep up the fab work and sorry you had to deal with so called customers.”
“Shocked at this,” another said. “We had a brilliant night in the restaurant as always, would definitely recommend.”
Last year, Mr Saeid previously said he was left sickened after a troll left a string of racist reviews on Tripadvisor.
The Sutton Coldfield businessman said at the time the venue was the subject of hateful reviews during December 2019.
One of the reviews outrageously claimed the businesses was a ‘terrorist front’ and was used by a ‘grooming gang’.
Other reviews also went on to personally attack the business and the staff.
Mr Saeid said: “It’s crazy to see such comments about different businesses within the area I felt
sick to my stomach reading what this individual has stated.
“There is no way the reviews are genuine. But to see the lengths someone is ready to go to damage a well-respected business and its reputation really does baffle me.”
