BT Tower and London Eye lit up to kick-off the Pride of Britain Awards countdown

The BT Tower and iconic London Eye have tonight been lit up to begin the countdown to The Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards.

The annual celebration famously honours all the incredible achievements of ordinary people.

Broadcast next Sunday, the bash – hosted by Carol Vorderman for the 22nd time – will certainly feel very different.

Current restrictions mean that we can’t bring our winners to the awards so, in a unique 2020 twist, we are taking the awards to them.

This year will be extra special and with the countdown really on, two of London’s most recognisable landmarks have been lit up in red, white and blue.

Plenty of big names are at the ready – including Captain Tom Moore, following his phenomenal fundraising efforts during the pandemic.

Manchester United and England football star Marcus Rashford MBE, who has been working relentlessly to ensure no child in the UK goes hungry again, is also hoping to celebrate.

Celebrities and public figures including HRH Prince Charles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, David Beckham, Ant and Dec and Stephen Fry will be making sure the night goes with a bang.

Carol, 59, expects to be in floods of tears when the show goes out.

She says: “This year will be strange and that’s why I know I’ll be in absolute buckets. I’ll be a wreck. I’m really sad I can’t be with everybody.

“Normally I see everybody and go and meet people during the year, privately, not for the telly.”

The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, will be broadcast on November 1 at 9pm.
